If you haven’t heard of our portfolio-building event COLORPOP for photographers – you’re missing out!!! I’m so excited to start blogging each of the 10 photo shoots we organized for our event as a way to share a little bit more of the planning and behind the scenes process. Plus, these shoots were so cool that they deserve to live somewhere other than Instagram.
Colorpop Portfolio Weekend 2022 took place July 22-24 and August 5-7; over these two weekends, 40 photographers of all skill levels and backgrounds traveled from around the world to Utah. This year, our event was more like a retreat – we all stayed together in a big house, ate together, had educational activities in the evenings, and made lifetime friends and connections. Honestly, it felt like summer camp for photographers – and as a retired camp counselor, it was totally my jam. 😉

EVENT: COLORPOP PORTFOLIO WEEKEND
For this concept, we were inspired by iridescence. The rainbow array of colors you see when you blow bubbles – cool colors like purples, pinks, blues. This is what we kept in mind when styling wardrobe, but we knew we wanted to also incorporate actual bubbles too, so we got some giant bubble wands. Our assistants stood on the sidelines creating them (though the wind did pose a challenge) while the models posed behind the shapes. Meanwhile, we had a few other tricks up our sleeve – an iridescent shower curtain made of a cellophane-type material that reflected the sunlight perfectly, and …. a plexiglass table we had made. We could have used this piece in any concept, really, but we knew it would be cohesive with this concept. Photographers climbed under the table and directed the models, who climbed on top and did some edgy poses. It was a an iridescent DREAM!
Check out my favorite shots below from both weekends of our event:
