Ashley and I have always wanted to do a photo shoot involving lots and lots of chairs. Now this may seem like a simple idea, but sometimes keeping elements like backdrops, props, and wardrobe minimal can lead to the strongest photos. Having more negative space gives the viewer’s eye a place to rest and focus on the emphasis of the image, and this concept in particular allowed us to get really creative with posing.

For this concept, we wanted to bring line drawings to life by creating 3D shapes. We knew that having a variety of shapes in different colors and forms would be an opportunity for our models to get really creative with posing in between them and allow photographers to interact with them while shooting too.

For this shoot, we wanted to do a creative, editorial photo shoot inspired by the visuals of the folk horror film Midsommar. If you’ve seen it, you know the film is obviously very disturbing, but it’s also very beautiful, and its vivid color palettes and Nordic themes influenced the styling of our own wardrobe and props.

The inspiration for this photo shoot comes from Henri Matisse’s painting The Dance, which is a painting known for its bold colors and themes of unity and harmony, with figures holding hands, dancing together in a circle. We decided to bring it to life by hiring contemporary dancers as models and going to locations with lots of room for them to frolic – we started at the sand dunes but also went to this big open field with rolling hills.

For this creative portrait shoot, we wanted to recreate the covers of Vogue Magazine from the 50s and 60s, many of which consisted of tight closeup shots and amazing hats of different styles. To put our own twist on the idea, we decided to do some pattern-on-pattern styling by using the same material for the garment the model wears that the backdrop was made of.

For this styled bridal concept, we wanted to go outside the box of what a typical wedding styled shoot might look like by adding a bit of a creative twist. We were inspired by black & white photos of western films from the 1920s – 1950s, and we knew we needed real horses in the shot for it to feel really western, so we found a horse ranch with the most incredible mountain views.

A lot of the landscapes here in Utah kind of feel like you’re on another planet, especially any location with red rock. So for this photo shoot, we decided to do a fashion editorial-inspired concept with four models, styling them in out-of-this-world wardrobe, hair, and makeup. Our goal for the shoot was for it to feel like these metallic aliens were stranded on an unfamiliar planet, but with a little bit of a 60s sci-fi influence on the styling.

When coming up with concepts for our photo shoots at Colorpop, Ashley and I are often inspired by art history, fashion editorials, movies and TV, interior design, sculpture, and other forms of art. Ashley recently went to Mexico for Day of the Dead and left feeling so inspired by Frida Kahlo’s work and life. For Colorpop, we wanted to think about Frida’s style and reimagine it in our own, modernized way. Almost like, “what would Frida wear if she was alive today?“
